Footwear FAQs
Q) What is the difference between orthotics and shoe inserts?
A) Some people have confusion when it comes to orthotics and shoe inserts, thinking that the two are the same thing. This is not the case and the confusion likely stems from the fact that an orthotic is typically a shoe insert, but not all shoe inserts are orthotics.
When someone typically refers to a shoe insert, they’re referring to the over-the-counter inserts that can be purchased at most retail stores and nationwide pharmacies. These products can be used to provide additional cushioning or arch support. They are mass-produced and not intended to cure medical conditions.
Orthotics are medical devices prescribed by a podiatrist that match the contours of a patient’s feet and are designed to account for the way he or she moves. These inserts are intended to treat a medical condition, like plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, or flat feet.
If you have a condition that might be effectively treated with a customized pair of orthotics, come see Tejas Pandya, DPM, at Capital District Podiatry. We have locations in both Troy and Clifton Park, NY, for your convenience. Call (518) 273-0053 or schedule an appointment online today.
